Serpukhov Historical and Art Museum is the largest and richest picture gallery in the Moscow Region. Opened in 1920. The basis of the collection is the collection of the Serpukhov manufacturers Marayev. In the 1920s–1930s the museum's holdings were supplemented with works of art from nearby estates and central museum repositories.
The museum's exhibition features works by well-known Russian artists I.K. Aivazovsky, I.I. Shishkin, G.I. Semiradsky, A.O. Orlovsky, K.E. Makovsky, V.E. Makovsky, A.A. Kharlamov, N.A. Yaroshenko, A.K. Savrasov, I.I. Levitan, V.D. Polenov, V.M. Vasnetsov, K.F. Yuon, S.Yu. Zhukovsky, K.A. Korovin.
A particular pride of the museum is its collection of painting and graphics by Russian avant-garde artists of the early 20th century: N.S. Goncharova, D. Burliuk, R.R. Falk, I.I. Mashkov, and a collection of early sculptures by S.T. Konenkov. In the section of Western European art there is painting from the Flemish, Dutch, Italian, French and other schools of the 16th–19th centuries. The exhibition is complemented by works of sculpture, furniture, ceramics and glass.
