Nikolai Nikolaevich Zhukov was a Soviet graphic artist, a master of easel portraiture, and an illustrator. He was a People's Artist of the USSR and a laureate of two Stalin Prizes. Zhukov was born in Moscow on 19 November (2 December) 1908 into a lawyer's family. In 1916 the family moved to Yelets. Zhukov received his artistic education at the Nizhny Novgorod Art and Industrial College, and then at the Saratov Art and Industrial College (now the Saratov Art School named after A. P. Bogolyubov), which he graduated from in 1930.

In 1932 he began his creative career, carrying out a variety of commissions for printing houses and publishers. These included designs for confectionery wrappers, advertising posters, and magazine cover layouts. During the war Zhukov served in the artillery, worked on the editorial staff of an army newspaper on the Kalinin Front and simultaneously as a war correspondent for the newspaper Pravda. He created a number of well-known frontline posters, such as "Defend Moscow!" (co-authored with V. S. Klimashin), "Stand Firm!", "Fight to the Death!", and "They Shall Not Pass!". In 1968 and 1973 he visited Italy, where he produced a series of graphic portraits of participants in the Italian Resistance. Nikolai Nikolaevich Zhukov passed away on 24 September 1973 in Moscow and was buried at the Novodevichy Cemetery.
