Valentin Mikhailovich Sidorov – a Soviet and Russian painter, a master of landscape painting, and a teacher. He was born on May 5, 1928 in the Tver Governorate. From 1940 to 1942 he studied at the art studio of the House of Pioneers in Moscow. From 1943 to 1948 he studied at the Moscow Secondary Art School. In 1948 he entered the Leningrad Institute of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture named after I. E. Repin. In 1952 he transferred to the Moscow State Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov, which he graduated from in 1954 with a specialization as a painter.
From 1960 to 1966 he was the artistic director of the House of Creativity "Academic Dacha" named after I. E. Repin. From 1972 to 1984 he held the position of secretary, and from 1984 to 1987 he was the first secretary of the board of the Union of Artists of the RSFSR. From 1987 to 2009 he headed the Union of Artists of Russia. From 2009 he was the honorary chairman of that organization. Since 1994 he taught at the Moscow State Academic Art Institute named after V. I. Surikov. Professor in the Department of Painting and Composition (1996). Member of the Russian Academy of Arts and the Union of Writers of Russia. People's Artist of the USSR (1988) and of Ukraine (2004). He was awarded the Order of Honour (1996), the Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" III and IV classes (2008, 2003), the Order of Francysk Skaryna (2008, Belarus). He received a commendation from the President of the Russian Federation (1998). Laureate of the RSFSR State Prize named after I. E. Repin (1974), the USSR State Prize (1984) and the Russian Federation State Prize for 1996. He was awarded the International M. A. Sholokhov Prize (2000). Author of the album "Land of Inspiration" (1985, dedicated to the centenary of the House of Creativity "Academic Dacha"), the novella "Burn, Burn Bright..." (2001), and a number of articles on culture and art.
Some notable works: "A Gloomy Day. Korovino" (1952), "Clouds Float Above the Earth" (1985), "Birds Headed South" (1990), "The Parental Stone" (2001), "The Holy Mountain" (2002). Valentin Mikhailovich Sidorov died on January 9, 2021 in Moscow of coronavirus.
