Vladimir Ivanovich Povetkin

Vladimir Ivanovich Povetkin – a musicologist and restorer, the founder and first director of the Novgorod Center for Musical Antiquities. He was born in the village of Soldatsko-Stepnoye in the Stalingrad Oblast. He graduated from the Art and Graphic Pedagogical School in Kursk. He served in the Northern Fleet. In 1969 he moved to Novgorod, where he began collaborating with the Novgorod Museum-Reserve, working in painting, graphic arts and wooden sculpture.

In 1975 Vladimir Povetkin began restoring and reconstructing archaeological finds — wooden household items of ancient Novgorodians, including musical instruments. In 1978, using his own method, he restored uniquely sounding lyre-shaped gusli from the mid-11th century with an inscription on a fragment reading 'Slovisha'. For this work his name was entered in the Book of Records of Russia 'Divo: Wonders, Records, Achievements'. Later he took up restoration of birch-bark letters. He participated in the restoration of the oldest book in the Slavic world — the Novgorod Psalter of the 11th century.

In 1990 he founded the Center for Musical Antiquities, which initially functioned as a public organization under the Soviet Fund for Culture. From 1991 it became independent — the autonomous non-profit organization V. I. Povetkin Cultural Center 'Musical Antiquities'. The main work of the center is connected with the study and popularization of ancient musical art. Vladimir Povetkin was one of the initiators of the magazine 'Chelo', and also created illustrations for the magazine's sections. Vladimir Ivanovich Povetkin passed away on October 10, 2010 and was buried at the Western Cemetery in Veliky Novgorod.
