Staraya Ladoga Museum-Reserve. Strelochnaya Tower
About museum
Located on the point of the peninsula at the confluence of the Volkhov and Ladozhka rivers, the Strelochnaya Tower was built to guard the mouth of the Ladozhka, to stop enemy vessels sailing up the Volkhov, and to control river crossings on the road from Tikhvin to Oreshek. The semicircular tower in plan had a wide fan radiating from its center and covering nearly half the horizon. Restoration of the fortress began in the 1980s, during which the slab facing was restored. In 2012–2015 a project to recreate the Strelochnaya Tower was developed and implemented, taking into account all modern restoration requirements. The tower walls were rebuilt to their original height, while the ruins were left open for viewing. Since December 11, 2020, the Strelochnaya Tower has hosted the exhibition "Archaeology: from the Neolithic to the Early Middle Ages".
