Sergei Vasilievich Rachmaninoff was a Russian composer, pianist, and conductor. He was born in the Novgorod Governorate. A penchant for music ran in many members of the Rachmaninoff family and was particularly evident in Sergei's grandfather, Arkady Alexandrovich Rachmaninoff, who was an excellent pianist and a pupil of John Field. Rachmaninoff began studying music at the age of four. He later studied at the Moscow Conservatory under Professor N. S. Zverev. After the successful premiere of the opera Aleko, his career as a composer and pianist developed rapidly, despite the failure of his First Symphony and the subsequent depression. After treatment and the support of his loved ones, Rachmaninoff achieved international recognition, toured extensively throughout Europe and America, and left a significant mark on the world's musical culture.
