About museum

The museum was founded in 1918 and opened to visitors in 1921. In 2014 a decision was made to renovate the museum, which was carried out under the direction of the renowned theatrical designer Valery Levental. The modular design allows the gallery space to be easily reconfigured depending on the aims and objectives of future projects. In 2015 the museum opened an exhibition dedicated to the 70th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Work is currently underway on the conversion of the imperial foyers into museum spaces, as well as on presenting historical models of the Bolshoi Theatre buildings and video and photographic materials on modern electronic media.
