Magadan Regional Museum of Local History
About museum
Since 1934 the Magadan Regional Museum of Local History has been one of the most important scientific and educational institutions of the Northeast. It was organized on the initiative of members of the Okhotsk–Kolyma local history circle and at the time of opening its collection included 600 ethnographic exhibits of the Evens and Yakuts. The first keeper of the museum was Ts. M. Kron, and from 1936 to 1952 the director was A. P. Khmelinin. A unique botanical garden was created within the museum, and archaeological and ethnographic expeditions were also carried out. The museum's scientific research in the field of plant cultivation proved useful during the Great Patriotic War. As of January 1, 1936 the museum collection already numbered 3,600 items, and since 1985 the museum has been conducting systematic archaeological research.
