A. P. Chekhov Literary Museum, Taganrog
About museum
\r\nIn 1914 a new building was opened in Taganrog, designed by the great architect F. O. Shekhtel, which housed the library and the A. P. Chekhov Museum. Over the years the museum's exhibitions have constantly changed and its collections have grown. In 1975 the A. P. Chekhov Literary Museum moved to the former building of the boys' classical gymnasium, where Anton Chekhov spent 11 years, a quarter of his life. By January 29, 2010 a new exhibition, "A. P. Chekhov: To His Hometown and the World", was prepared; it is one of the best in Russia. It illustrates the writer's entire career and his worldwide recognition, and also presents rare exhibits, including manuscripts and personal belongings of A. P. Chekhov, paintings by well-known artists, and dedicatory inscriptions from notable figures of Russian culture. All Chekhov museums are united in a single collection that numbers 15,000 items. The Literary Museum is part of the Taganrog State Literary and Historical-Architectural Museum-Reserve.
