Historical and Architectural Complex 'Astrakhan Kremlin'
About museum
In 1558, in the lower reaches of the Volga, I. G. Vyrodkov, a diak of the Razryadny Prikaz, built the first wooden fortress on a high hill. During the reigns of Ivan IV the Terrible and Boris Godunov it was rebuilt in stone. Durable Tatar plinfa (thin fired bricks) from the ruins of Golden Horde towns were used for the construction. The Kremlin was modeled on the Moscow Kremlin and had eight towers — three gateway towers and four blind towers. It featured a state-of-the-art system for organizing 'fire combat'. The Kremlin hosts exhibitions and displays, and cultural and business events are also held there. The Astrakhan Kremlin has become a true monument of history and architecture.
