About museum
In 1870 Ivan Yushkov, secretary of the Tobolsk Provincial Statistical Committee, at the initiative of the Tobolsk Provincial Administration, opened an exhibition consisting of items on the history and ethnography of the Siberian region. In the autumn of 1890 the people of Tobolsk built a special building for the first local history museum in Siberia at their own expense. In the same year the society "Tobolsk Provincial Museum" was established, headed by Governor A. N. Troinitsky. During this period the museum became a center for the study of the history, economy and nature of Siberia, took part in exhibitions, studied the ethnographic heritage and handicrafts of local peoples, and also conducted annual expeditions. From 1893 to 1918 the collection of scientific materials "Yearbook of the Tobolsk Provincial Museum" was published, which today is a bibliographic rarity and contains valuable information about Western Siberia.
