Aleksey Afanasyevich Kokel – a Russian and Soviet artist and professor. He was born in the village of Tarkhany, Buinsky Uyezd, Simbirsk Governorate, into a large Chuvash family. From 1902 to 1903 Kokel studied at the Normal Drawing School attached to the Pedagogical Courses of the Imperial Academy of Arts in Saint Petersburg, and in 1904 he entered the Higher Art School of the same Academy.
In 1905 he changed his surname from Afanasyev to Kokel. For his diploma painting "In the Tea House" (1912) he received the title of artist and the right to travel to Italy. From 1916 Kokel lived and worked in Kharkiv, taking an active part in the creation of artistic associations and in the development of the system of art education in Ukraine.
During the Great Patriotic War and the German occupation, Kokel and his wife remained in Kharkiv. After the war he continued his work as an artist and as a teacher at the Kharkiv Art Institute. Aleksey Afanasyevich Kokel passed away on February 4, 1956, and was buried in Kharkiv.
