Ilya Yefimovich Repin

Ilya Yefimovich Repin was a great Russian realist painter, a master of portrait, historical and genre painting, a teacher, and a full member of the St. Petersburg Imperial Academy of Arts. Ilya Yefimovich Repin was born into a military family in Chuhuiv, Kharkov Governorate. From a young age he studied painting, and in 1863 he entered the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg. In 1870 Repin presented his first monumental painting 'Barge Haulers on the Volga', which received wide recognition both in Russia and abroad. From 1873 to 1876 he traveled around Europe, where he became acquainted with the Impressionists. In Paris he created the painting 'Sadko', for which he was awarded the title of academician.

From 1877 to 1882 the artist lived in Moscow and collaborated with the Society for Traveling Art Exhibitions (the Peredvizhniki). During this period he produced his well-known works 'Tsarevna Sofia' and 'Portrait of V. I. Serov'. From 1883 to 1900 Repin settled in St. Petersburg. There he created masterpieces: 'Ivan the Terrible and His Son Ivan', 'They Did Not Expect Him', 'The Zaporozhian Cossacks...', and 'Jubilee Session of the State Council'. The last three decades of his life Repin spent in Finland, at the Penates estate. In his late work the artist focused on religious subjects. He also wrote the memoirs 'Far and Near'. Ilya Yefimovich Repin died in Kuokkala on 29 September 1930 and was buried there.
