Literary Museum «House of the Yazykovs»

About museum

In the architectural appearance of the city of Ulyanovsk, the building of the Literary Museum «House of the Yazykovs» occupies a special place. It is a noble urban mansion built at the turn of the 18th–19th centuries, executed in the graceful proportions of Classicism. It is one of five similar two-hundred-year-old structures preserved in the city. In the mid-1980s the Literary Museum «House of the Yazykovs» was opened in the building. The museum's founders were Larisa Yuryevna Ershova and Elena Konstantinovna Bespalova. They purchased 19th-century furniture, antique engravings and lithographs in capital antique shops, and also commissioned copies of paintings and graphic works from Ulyanovsk artists. The museum's opening took place on June 5, 1999 and was timed to the 200th anniversary of the birth of A. S. Pushkin. The museum's main exhibition «Pushkin and the Simbirsk Residents» is located in three ceremonial halls on the second floor of the mansion and tells about the poet's Simbirsk friends, notable Simbirsk residents connected to him, as well as about the period from the last third of the 18th century to the mid-19th century.
