Svobodny Local History Museum

\r\nOn August 9, 1964, a Public Local History Museum was opened in the city of Svobodny; it was organized by Nikolai Ivanovich Popov, an honored teacher of schools of the RSFSR. In 1969 the museum was moved to a five-story building, and in 1980 it was awarded the honorary title "People's". In 2005 the museum was given the name of its founder — Nikolai Ivanovich Popov. The museum's collection comprises 25,000 items, including minerals, numismatics, taxidermy specimens of animals and birds, an archaeological collection, and photo-documentary complexes. In four halls the museum displays exhibitions that trace the history of the settlement of the Amur region (Priamurye), the life and everyday life of the first settlers, the stages of construction of the Amur Railway, as well as the historical development of the city of Svobodny from 1912 to the present day.
