Kansk Local History Museum
About museum
In 1912 the first private local history museum in Kansk was founded under the leadership of Dmitry Semyonovich Kargopolov. The basis for the museum collections were his personal collections, which included materials on local archaeology and paleontology, examples of Russian copper casting, and numismatic items. In 1922 the 'Museum of the Local Region' was opened, containing 6,400 exhibits. In 2001 the museum moved to a building on Moskovskaya Street that formerly housed the Furor cinema. Today the museum holds more than 30,000 museum items, including an ethnographic collection and a collection of written sources dating from the late 18th century. The fine arts department comprises graphics and painting, as well as icons acquired from private individuals. The museum also houses a research library with a collection of over 5,000 books on various fields of knowledge.
