Dmitry Narkisovich Mamin-Sibiryak was a Russian prose writer and playwright. Dmitry Mamin-Sibiryak (real surname Mamin) was born on November 6, 1852, in the Urals. After finishing school he entered a religious school in Yekaterinburg and the seminary in Perm. While studying at the seminary he became interested in literature and theater and began to write.
In 1871 Mamin-Sibiryak moved to Saint Petersburg and enrolled in the veterinary department of the Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy. However, he soon realized that his calling was literature. He left the academy and entered Saint Petersburg University, where he studied at the faculties of medicine, natural sciences, and law. In 1875 Mamin-Sibiryak began working as a reporter for a Petersburg newspaper. His first published story 'In the Stones' was highly praised by critics. In 1883 his novel 'Privalov's Millions' was published, which brought him recognition.
In his works Mamin-Sibiryak depicted the life of ordinary people of the Urals, their strength of spirit and love of life. He also described the picturesque nature of his native region. Mamin-Sibiryak was married twice. In his second marriage he had a daughter, Elena. Mamin-Sibiryak's last story, 'Mumma', was published in 1907. The writer died in 1912.
