State Historical Museum
About museum
On February 9, 1872, the highest decree of Emperor Alexander II was issued to establish in Moscow the Historical Museum named after Tsesarevich Alexander Alexandrovich. This date is the founding day of one of Russia's largest national historical museums, the State Historical Museum. In 2022 the SHM will celebrate its 150th anniversary. The museum's extensive collection, consisting of 4.8 million items and 15 million documents, represents Russia's thousand-year history: from the Stone Age to the 19th century. It is an important source for the study of Russia's history and culture; permanent exhibitions and a variety of displays are created on its basis for the SHM's educational and outreach activities.
