About museum
Fyodor Grigoryevich Solntsev – a Russian painter and art restorer, as well as an architect and historian. He was born in the village of Verkhne-Nikulskoye in the Yaroslavl Governorate. He came from a family of serfs owned by Count A. I. Musin-Pushkin. The count, having noticed Fyodor's talent, freed his family, which allowed Solntsev's father, Grigory Kondratyevich, to send his son to the Imperial Academy of Arts in 1815.
Over his long career Solntsev produced more than 3,000 highly detailed sketch drawings depicting antiquities: everyday objects, icons, architecture, clothing, weapons, and armor. About 700 of these sketches formed the basis for the publication "Antiquities of the Russian State." In 1836 he received the title of academician for the painting "The Meeting of Grand Prince Svyatoslav with John Tzimiskes." In addition, Solntsev took part in the painting and restoration of numerous churches and, together with the architect Pyotr Gerasimov, restored the Terem Palace of the Moscow Kremlin in 1836–1849.
In 1876, to mark the 50th anniversary of his creative activity, Solntsev was awarded the title of professor. He spent the last ten years of his life designing books for the Orthodox publisher Ignaty Tuzov. Fyodor Grigoryevich Solntsev died on March 15, 1892, and was buried at the Volkovo Orthodox Cemetery in Saint Petersburg, south of the Literator's footbridges.
