Alatyr Local History Museum
About museum
The Alatyr Local History Museum has become a true keeper of documents and historical valuables related to the past of the town of Alatyr. The museum's exhibitions are distinguished by the large number of original documents and objects, the abundance of diverse exhibition material, and professionally arranged interiors that convey the atmosphere of pre‑revolutionary Alatyr. The materials on display cover a 400‑year period of the town's history, from 1552 to the 1950s. Visitors can see a model of the original fortress, authentic photographs of Alatyr's churches and monasteries at the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, learn about the consequences of the presence of Stepan Razin's and Yemelyan Pugachev's detachments in the town, and also see items that were sold in merchants' shops and stores of pre‑revolutionary Alatyr. The museum presents information about world‑famous natives of the Alatyr region, such as Pyotr Kikin, Alexey Krylov, Stepan Erzia and Alexey Sudaev.
