Pyotr Nikolaevich Chermensky was a historian, archaeologist, and local historian of the Tambov, Ryazan, and Kursk regions. He was born in the village of Chermnye in the Tambov Governorate (now Ryazan Oblast) into the family of a psalmist. Chermensky studied at the Shatsk Theological School, the Tambov Theological Seminary, and the Borisoglebsk Gymnasium, and in 1909 graduated from the history department of the St. Petersburg Historical-Philological Institute.
His scholarly career began with the publication of the work "The Town of Lebedyan and Its Uyezd in the 17th Century" in 1913. In the following years he founded the local history museum in Lebedyan (1919) and headed the Tambov Provincial Museum (1920). In 1928 Chermensky became head of the department for the study of productive forces of the Central Black Earth Region.
In 1931 he was arrested and convicted on fabricated charges and subsequently spent eight years in the GULAG camps. After his release in 1943, Chermensky was appointed director of the Kursk Regional Local History Museum and combined this work with teaching. Pyotr Nikolaevich Chermensky died on September 10, 1973, and was buried in the Preobrazhensky Cemetery in Lebedyan.
