Anna Akhmatova Museum at the Fountain House
About museum
The Anna Akhmatova Museum at the Fountain House is one of St. Petersburg's most important museums. It was opened in 1989 on the centenary of the poet's birth and became the first museum dedicated to representatives of the Akhmatova generation under the conditions of a totalitarian state. The museum displays numerous exhibits that tell the story of the 20th century and its influence on Anna Akhmatova's life. In 2005 an exhibition, 'Joseph Brodsky's American Study,' was opened, dedicated to the meeting of Akhmatova and Brodsky. In addition, a branch of the museum is the apartment-museum of Lev Nikolaevich Gumilev, where the authentic apartment interior, library and archive of this outstanding scholar and orientalist are preserved. The museum preserves the memory not only of Lev Nikolaevich but also of his father — the poet Nikolai Stepanovich Gumilev. Visiting the museum provides a more detailed understanding of the fates of the people belonging to the Akhmatova generation.
