Recently, employees of the Kirov Regional Museum of Local Lore and the M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin House-Museum brought five linden saplings to Kirov from the village of Spas-Ugol in Moscow Oblast (formerly Tver Governorate), where the Saltykov family's ancestral estate is located.
These are shoots taken from those very famous ancient lindens under which the young Mikhail Saltykov used to stroll. On April 25 the lindens were planted on the grounds of the M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin house-museum in Kirov.
"We planted the trees carefully, following all the rules, and we will take care of them. We are sure the saplings will take root, grow, and delight our visitors for many years," say the museum staff.
The Kirov residents traveled to Spas-Ugol as part of cooperation with regional museums and the implementation of joint projects. The Kirov delegation visited the historical and literary museum that tells the story of the writer's family and his parents. There are special memorial items there — a chair and a smoking pipe inlaid with mother-of-pearl — which belonged to the writer's father, Evgraf Saltykov.
"The trip left vivid impressions. And the 'Shchedrin' lindens will, over time, become a calling card of our museum and an attraction for visitors," the M. E. Saltykov-Shchedrin house-museum noted.
