About museum

In the second half of the 19th century a beautiful red-brick mansion was built that belonged to the Kamyshin merchant Fedoseev. During the Soviet period the building served as a large communal apartment for the actors of the Kamyshin Drama Theatre named after Tairov. During the Great Patriotic War the family of the writer Mikhail Aleksandrovich Sholokhov lived here temporarily. In 1996 the mansion was transferred to the local history museum. Based on the expanded collection of merchant and bourgeois furniture — more than 110 exhibits — it was decided to create in the museum an exhibition of merchant and bourgeois household interiors from the late 19th to the early 20th century. In the parlor you can see the life of the well-to-do segment of Kamyshin’s urban population, which emulated the nobility. Also on display is the interior of a living room of prosperous German colonists, who at the beginning of the 20th century made up a quarter of the city’s population. The museum offers guided tours and quests, and it is also possible to tour the rooms of the merchant house with an audio guide together with its owner.
