An inter-museum exhibition project of traditional costume is an opportunity to learn more about the culture and history of different regions of Russia through clothing and household items, which are an important factor of national identity. The exhibition presents costume ensembles from the Novgorod, Smolensk, Kostroma, Olonets, Pskov and other governorates of the 19th–early 20th centuries.
At the core of the exhibition are unique clothing ensembles of the Izboryans and the small indigenous Finno-Ugric Seto people, which are complemented by a collection of silver jewelry from the Izborsk Museum-Reserve. Members of the Seto community still pass their costume down from generation to generation and wear it only on holidays. The exhibition also includes works of art, household items and decorative-applied arts, completing the overall picture of the cultural history of the peoples.
