About museum
The museum was opened to the public on September 30, 1890, and has since become one of the main venues in the cultural life of the city and region. It was founded in 1884 by the Society for the Study of the Amur Region and is located in a building that is an architectural monument of the 20th century. The museum presents permanent exhibitions dedicated to the history and culture of the city and region, as well as temporary exhibitions. Collections in archaeology, ethnography, and botany, gathered during service in the Far East, were transferred to the museum. In 1903, the name of V.K. Arsenyev, an explorer of the Far East who became the museum's most active collector and donor, appeared on the list of full members of the Society for the Study of the Amur Region. In the 1970s the museum was allocated the building at 20 Leninskaya (Svetlanskaya) Street in the city center. The building, built to the design of architect Vladimir Antonovich Plansen, has welcomed millions of visitors and became one of the city's first architectural monuments over a century ago.
