A GREAT LITERARY FIGURE IS REMEMBERED AT THE A.N. RADISHCHEV MUSEUM
To mark the 155th anniversary of I.I. Lazhechnikov's death, the A.N. Radishchev Museum held a local history hour for visitors titled "Life and Pen for the Benefit of the Fatherland." Participants learned about the life and works of I.I. Lazhechnikov and discovered how the writer's fate became linked with the Penza region.
Many well-known people are connected with Penza, and the life of I.I. Lazhechnikov, the author of such epoch-making works as "The Last Novik," "The Oprichnik," "The Ice House," and "Basurman," became closely intertwined with the Penza region in 1819. To the people of Penza, Ivan Ivanovich is known as the director of the gymnasium and the province's public schools; he made an invaluable contribution to the development of education in the Penza land, participating in the creation of libraries and the re-equipment of laboratories and school classrooms.
From the Penza province, I.I. Lazhechnikov took with him not only the satisfaction of the work done but also records of the "provincial words of the Penza and Saratov provinces." In a playful format, participants were invited to guess the meanings of Old Slavic words, and in the game "Finish the Quote" museum visitors were able to recall the author's works and complete quotations from the historical novel "The Ice House."
The local history hour gave museum visitors the opportunity to get to know I.I. Lazhechnikov's work more deeply. Participants expressed a desire to continue further acquaintance with the life and work of the great literary figure.
