District Local History Museum in the town of Melenki
About museum
The history of the Melenki region is presented in the Local History Museum. It is connected with the names of many outstanding people who influenced its development. For example, thanks to Count R. I. Vorontsov the village of Melenki acquired town status. The museum displays exhibits illustrating the history of the Melenki region from the 8th to the 19th centuries and products of local crafts. In the interior of a townsman's house there are icons in beautiful metal covers and photographs of the last priest of the Pokrovsky Cathedral, Father I. Tikhomirov. The "Wildlife of the Melenki District" section features stuffed specimens of local animals — 59 species. The "Traditions of Rural Home and Everyday Life" section demonstrates the hardships of peasant life, their diligence, resourcefulness and ability to use a variety of materials. The museum houses collections of exhibits characterizing the men’s and women’s crafts of the Melenki land: basket weaving, pottery, blacksmithing, weaving, knitting tablecloths, sewing garments and others.
