About museum
The Museum of the History of Saint Petersburg State University is the oldest museum dedicated to the history of a higher education institution in the country. It was established by order of the rector in 1945 on the basis of exhibitions held in 1939 and 1944. The proposal to create the museum first appeared in the 1930s in the university newspaper and in the guestbook of the exhibition on the history of the university organized in 1939. The museum's collections consist of documents, photographs, instruments, teaching materials, books, works of art, memorial items, awards, and gifts to the university. A significant part of the collections is formed by personal collections that contain materials on the lives and activities of the university's prominent scholars, such as M. A. Balugyansky, A. A. Inostrantsev, N. I. Kareev, V. A. Foka, A. N. Terenin, P. G. Lukirsky, S. E. Frish, Yu. V. Linnik, B. A. Ananyev, A. A. Ukhtomsky, and others. Currently the museum has a temporary exhibition dedicated to the founding of the university in 1724 and its history in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
