Nizhny Novgorod State Art Museum (NGKhM) is one of the oldest and largest regional museums in Russia. It was opened on June 25, 1896. Today its collection comprises more than 12,000 museum items created by domestic and foreign masters. Among NGKhM's exhibits are outstanding works of national and international importance.

The most complete and representative section of the museum collection is the collection of Russian art. It covers virtually all types of visual creativity, as well as all periods of development of national culture. At NGKhM you can see works by Bryullov, Aivazovsky, Vasnetsov, Repin, Makovsky, Levitan, Serov, Nesterov, Korovin, Roerich, and Kustodiev.

It is at NGKhM that you can see Konstantin Makovsky's "The Appeal of Minin" — the largest easel painting in Russian art by size (698×594 cm), created on a historical-patriotic theme.

In 2022 NGKhM opened the permanent exhibition '20th Century Art. 1900 — 1920: From Symbolism to the Avant-Garde'. Here visitors can feel the atmosphere of the era of the 'great experiment' and get acquainted with works by famous masters of the Russian avant-garde: Kandinsky, Malevich, Larionov, Goncharova, Mashkov, Rodchenko, Rozanova, Falk and others.
In the NGKhM Western European Art building visitors will encounter works by Tintoretto, El Greco, Bloch, Renoir and many others. In addition, museum guests can enjoy relaxation, lectures or concerts in the museum's flowering courtyard.

In 2023 NGKhM became the winner in the 'Museum of 2022' category of the annual The Art Newspaper Russia awards. For the first time in history this prize was awarded to a regional museum.

After a major reconstruction the museum is housed in three buildings:
NGKhM|RUSSIAN ART (Kremlin, building 3);
NGKhM|WESTERN EUROPEAN ART (Verkhnevolzhskaya Embankment, 3);
NGKhM|ART OF THE 20TH CENTURY (Minin and Pozharsky Square 2/2).

The museum's large-scale exhibition projects are also realized in venues new to the city — the Manege and the Packhouse exhibition hall.
