Sergey Nikolaevich Balandin – a Soviet and Russian architect, Doctor of Architecture, professor, Honored Architect of the Russian Federation. Founder of the Museum of the History of Architecture and Architectural Education of Siberia. Balandin was born into a family of employees in Irkutsk. In 1954 he graduated from the Novosibirsk Civil Engineering Institute, and in 1958 he completed its postgraduate studies. In subsequent years he held various positions at this institute, as well as at the Novosibirsk State Academy of Architecture and Arts, progressing from assistant to professor. He also undertook an internship in Italy.
Balandin was a member of several professional organizations, including the Novosibirsk branch of the Union of Architects of Russia and the All-Russian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments. For fifty years Balandin compiled an extensive collection of materials on the history of Siberian architecture. This collection, including photographic documents, drawings, projects and other artifacts, was added to the holdings of the Novosibirsk State Architectural Institute in 1995.
He is the author of numerous scholarly publications, including nine monographs dedicated to the history of Siberian architecture. Sergey Nikolaevich Balandin passed away on January 13, 2004 and was buried in Novosibirsk.
