About museum
The Museum of the History of Buryatia was established on October 10, 1923 by decree of the Buryat Revolutionary Committee. In 1958 it was given the name of the prominent Buryat ethnographer Matvey Nikolaevich Khangalov. Over the years the museum has become an important source for historical research and a showcase of the republic. Its collections comprise about 45,000 items, including 7,000 archaeological exhibits and documentary holdings. The museum also holds an ethnographic collection and objects of decorative and applied arts that reflect the culture of the peoples of the Pre-Baikal and Transbaikal regions from the 18th century to the present day.
