Black Sea Fleet Museum
About museum
The Black Sea Fleet Museum is one of the oldest military and maritime museums in Russia. It originates from the Sevastopol Defense Museum of 1854–1855, founded on 14 (26) September 1869 at the initiative of the participants of the 349-day defense of Sevastopol and under the patronage of Emperor Alexander II. For 25 years the museum's exhibits were housed in five rooms of General E. I. Totleben's house. In 1895 a new building was constructed to a design by academician architect A. M. Kochetov, which was personally approved by the Emperor. Inside it are bronze figures, ornaments, cast-iron fittings and stucco works made from sketches by sculptor B. V. Edwards in Odessa. Over its nearly one-and-a-half-century history the Black Sea Fleet Museum has become a true treasury of relics representing the various stages in the development of the Black Sea Fleet. Since 31 December 2020 it has been a branch of the Central Naval Museum named after Emperor Peter the Great.
