The Museum of Hygiene is a unique place in Russia where guided tours are conducted by physicians. It is located in a building constructed in 1755 for the educator I. I. Shuvalov. The museum's aim is to convey to the residents of Saint Petersburg knowledge about medicine and hygiene, disease prevention, and the promotion of a healthy lifestyle. The idea to create the museum arose in 1877, and it opened in 1919. On an area of 1,000 sq. m there are 11,000 exhibits, including numismatic items, philatelic materials, works of fine and monumental art, archival documents and printed publications. The exhibition helps people learn more about health and preserve it.
