Moscow Museum of Modern Art is the first state museum in Russia specializing in 20th and 21st century art. Over the course of its existence it has gained recognition and become an active participant in Moscow's art life. The museum's collection represents various stages in the development of the avant-garde: works by Russian authors as well as works by foreign artists. The exhibition includes creations by many classics of the Russian avant-garde, as well as works returned to their homeland from abroad. Great attention is paid to the work of nonconformist artists of the 1960s–1980s, as well as to works by the Georgian primitivist Niko Pirosmani. The museum is constantly expanding and developing its collection, supporting contemporary art in Russia.
