Sergey Anatolyevich Kuryokhin was a Soviet and Russian avant-garde musician, composer, screenwriter and actor. He spent his childhood and school years in Yevpatoria and was interested in music from an early age. In 1971 he moved to Leningrad and entered the Mussorgsky Music College at the Leningrad Conservatory, but was expelled for repeated absences. Kuryokhin began his musical career as a pianist in the jazz mainstream. Later he switched to free jazz and improvisational music. He was a member of the group 'Bolshoi Zheleznij Kolokol' (The Big Iron Bell). In the 1980s he participated in the recording of albums by the band 'Akvarium' (Aquarium). In 1984 Kuryokhin founded the performance ensemble 'Pop-Mechanica'. In 1991 he created his own record company, 'Kuritza Records'. In addition to music, Sergey Kuryokhin wrote soundtracks for films (over twenty) and also appeared in several of them, including 'Loh – pobeditel vody' (Loh – Winner of the Water), 'Dva kapitana 2' (Two Captains 2) and 'Kompleks nevmenyaemosti' (The Insanity Complex). On 9 July 1996 Sergey Kuryokhin died in Saint Petersburg after a prolonged battle with a rare disease — cardiac sarcoma. He is buried near Saint Petersburg at the Komarovskoye Cemetery.
