Valerian Vladimirovich Kuybyshev – a Russian revolutionary and Soviet party and political figure. Valerian Kuybyshev was born into a large family of a personal nobleman on 25 May (6 June) 1888 in the city of Omsk, Akmolinskaya Oblast, now the administrative center of Omsk Oblast. He received his primary education at a school in Kokchetav. In August 1898 the ten-year-old Valerian returned to Omsk – he was enrolled in the Siberian Cadet Corps. While studying at the corps, he joined the ranks of the Russian Social Democratic Labour Party (Bolsheviks). From 1905, as a student at the Military Medical Academy in Petersburg, he actively participated in the activities of the Petersburg Bolshevik organization. In the spring of 1906 he was expelled from the academy for participating in a student strike; hiding from the police, he moved to Omsk and was elected a member of the Omsk committee of the RSDLP. He was arrested eight times and exiled to Eastern Siberia four times.
After the February Revolution of 1917 Kuybyshev returned from exile, headed the Samara organization of the RSDLP (Bolsheviks) and was elected chairman of the Soviet. During the Civil War he played a significant role in the leadership of the Red Army.
After the Civil War he held leading positions in trade union and economic work. In December 1920 he was elected a member of the Presidium of the All-Russian Central Council of Trade Unions (VTsSPS), heading the economic department. He was responsible for the practical implementation of the GOELRO plan. Valerian Vladimirovich Kuybyshev died in Moscow in 1935. His ashes were interred in the Kremlin Wall.
