Memorial Museum of A.S. Popov

About museum

On November 7, 1957, in the fully renovated house of the Popov-Slovtsov family, the first small exhibition — in two rooms — dedicated to the native of Krasnoturinsk (Turinsk Mines), Alexander Stepanovich Popov, was opened. In 1980 the house was moved 4.5 meters inward within the block. In 1984, on the eve of the 125th anniversary of A.S. Popov’s birth, a full exhibition of the memorial house-museum was opened. Thanks to the great assistance of Popov’s daughter and granddaughter, Ekaterina Alexandrovna Popova-Kyandskaya and Ekaterina Georgievna Kyandskaya-Popova, the museum staff assembled an interesting memorial collection (documents, photographs, books, furniture, tableware, etc.), which made it possible to recreate two memorial rooms — a living room and a dining room — and to mount an exhibition on the scientist’s life and work in the remaining rooms. The exhibition tells about A.S. Popov’s life in Turinsk Mines, his years of study at the Dolmatov and Yekaterinburg theological schools, the Perm Theological Seminary, and Saint Petersburg University. Work in Kronstadt at the Mine Officer Class, at the Technical School, Popov’s development as a scientist, the formation of his family, work at the Nizhny Novgorod All-Russian Fair, and a trip to Chicago are stages of Alexander Stepanovich’s life path. In the “study” you can learn about A.S. Popov’s discovery, the trials and practical applications of his invention. Original instruments of the inventor of the radio and replicas of the first wireless telegraph receivers made by local radio amateurs are on display. 1901–1905 — work in Saint Petersburg as a professor and as the first elected director of the Saint Petersburg Electrotechnical Institute; the last documents and photographs of A.S. Popov and his family are shown. The exhibition also includes a hall of memory where gifts from guests of the town and the museum for the anniversary dates of the great scientist and the A.S. Popov memorial museum are exhibited. The memorial museum of A.S. Popov operates a collective radio station with the call sign R9DMP. Radio amateurs from the city radio club named after A.S. Popov regularly go on the air from the memorial museum and participate in various contests. On March 13, 2014, on the eve of the 155th anniversary of the scientist’s birth, the renovated exhibition of the A.S. Popov memorial house-museum was opened; it is presented in the section “Virtual exhibition of the A.S. Popov house-museum.”
