Stalin's Bunker
About museum
In 1990 the secret of Joseph Stalin's former bomb shelter, known as Stalin's Bunker, located in the building of the former CPSU regional committee in Samara, was revealed. It was one of five secret bunkers created to provide Stalin with a backup location known to only a few and kept strictly secret for 48 years. The bunker was built under the building of the Academy of Culture and Arts using 2,900 workers, 800 engineers, Moscow and Kharkiv subway specialists and miners from the Donbas. Today Stalin's Bunker has the status of a site of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia (EMERCOM) and is one of the most mysterious museums in Samara. Work is currently underway to include it on the UNESCO World Heritage List by 2024. Stalin's Bunker is located at a depth of 37 meters, making it one of the largest such structures in the world. For example, Hitler's bunker has a depth of 16 meters, while Churchill's and Roosevelt's shelters extend two floors underground.
