The Ts. S. Sampilov Art Museum is one of the leading museums of Eastern Siberia; it was established on October 25, 1943 and opened in 1944. In 1947 the museum received paintings and graphic works by well-known Russian artists of the late 17th – early 20th centuries from the State Russian Museum. In 1966 the museum was named after the founder of professional art in Buryatia, Honored Art Worker of the RSFSR Ts. S. Sampilov. The museum's collections comprise about 10,000 storage units: painting, graphics, sculpture, decorative-applied and jewelry art. The museum's total area is 3,500 sq. m, exhibition area 1,515 sq. m, storage 570 sq. m. Exhibition activity is one of the most important directions of the museum's work. In addition, the Ts. S. Sampilov Art Museum serves as the coordinating center for local museums and picture galleries of the Republic of Buryatia. Thus, the museum makes a significant contribution to the development of art and culture in Buryatia.
