Contemporary Art Gallery of the State Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Tatarstan (SMFA RT)
About museum
The Contemporary Art Gallery of the SMFA RT is one of the most important centers of Kazan's artistic life. It is located in a building constructed in 1979 at the intersection of Karl Marx and Komlev streets (now Mushtari). This structure, complex in plan and composition, features a dynamically developed form and is notable for its volume. The design team, led by architect G. A. Bakulin, was awarded the 1981 State Prize of the Tatar ASSR named after Gabdulla Tukay. In 2009 the building was transferred to the SMFA RT, and since then its role has included organizing a multifaceted art space to present classical and contemporary directions of visual art of the 21st century. The gallery hosts exhibitions, the international printmaking biennale "Vsadnik", as well as lectures and master classes. A collection of art photography is also being formed here, which includes works by the republic's leading photographers.
