On May 27, 1993 the East Siberian Museum of Soil Science named after I.V. Nikolaev at Irkutsk State University was opened. The collection includes over 5,000 exhibits that demonstrate the uniqueness and diversity of the landscapes and soil cover of Eastern Siberia, as well as soil evolution during the Quaternary period, archaeological finds, soil fauna, parent materials, agronomic resources of the Pre-Baikal area, the history of soil science development and the exploitation of land resources of Irkutsk Oblast. The museum presents information about soil scientists working in Eastern Siberia and their scientific contributions to the study of the region. The museum is a non-profit institution in the field of natural and fundamental sciences, so its primary purpose is not to generate profit or distribute any profit among participants. It belongs to a municipal authority.
