Verkhoyansky District Local History Museum "Pole of Cold"
About museum
The "Pole of Cold" Museum was opened in 1990 in the town of Verkhoyansk, which is located beyond the Arctic Circle. It presents natural landscapes, the area's animal and plant life, the culture of indigenous peoples, geology and paleontology, the ethnography of the Yakuts and Evens, Russian material culture, and the history of political exile. Visitors can see household items, hunting equipment, livestock- and horse-breeding implements from the 18th–20th centuries. The Yakut epic Olonkho and Yakut folktales performed by local Olonkho storytellers are also featured. Of particular interest is the Yakut yurt — the traditional dwelling of the Verkhoyan Yakuts. The "Pole of Cold" Museum is a member of the Society of Historical Towns of Russia and offers visitors a rich collection of interesting exhibits.
