Nizhny Tagil Museum-Reserve "Gornozavodskoy Ural"
About museum
Nizhny Tagil Museum-Reserve is a system of museumified monuments of industrial heritage, history and culture and an association of museum institutions of the city of Nizhny Tagil. Its history traces back to the Museum of Natural History and Antiquities founded by P.N. Demidov in 1841. Today the "Gornozavodskoy Ural" museum-reserve is a multidisciplinary scientific and educational institution. Its activities cover historical, natural science, artistic, literary and technical fields. Currently the museum-reserve includes ten active museums of various profiles that vividly and fully reflect all facets of the development of the "mining-factory" civilization. The Nizhny Tagil Museum-Reserve possesses very rich collections numbering more than 468,000 items. The core of the collection consists of museum objects directly related to the founders and owners of the Tagil factories — the Demidov dynasty. The museum-reserve includes the only Museum of the History of the Development of Ferrous Metallurgy Technology in Russia — the Museum-Factory — one of the largest in the world’s industrial heritage, established in 1989 on the basis of an 18th–20th century ferrous metallurgy enterprise. The exhibition of the Historical and Local Lore Museum clearly and fully reveals the history of the Tagil region from ancient times to 1917. The Museum of Nature and Environmental Protection introduces the richness and uniqueness of the Ural land — its exceptionally beautiful minerals, flora and fauna. The Historical-Technical Museum "Cherepanov House" offers the opportunity to engage with the traditions of Tagil inventors and to learn about their biographies and inventions. The Ethnographic Complex, the Museum of Everyday Life and Crafts of the mining-factory population, and the Museum of Tray-Handicraft are the guardians of traditional trades of the mining-factory population and the famous art of Ural lacquer painting on metal. The museum-reserve includes two literary museums: the A.P. Bondin Memorial Literary Museum and the D.N. Mamin-Sibiryak Literary-Memorial Museum. The youngest museum in the system is the Demidov Dacha Estate Museum, opened on 23 September 2013. The museum is located in a building that is the only example in Nizhny Tagil of a private country estate from the first half of the 19th century.
