Sergey Nikolaevich Gorshin – a scientist specializing in wood preservation. Honored Worker of Science and Technology of the RSFSR, Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor, honorary citizen of the city of Khimki, collector of Russian realist painting and graphics, founder of the Khimki Art Gallery named after S. N. Gorshin. Sergey Nikolaevich was born in 1908 in the village of Bulgakovo in the Penza Governorate, and in 1920 he moved with his family to Saransk. After finishing secondary school he entered Kazan University, later transferred to the Forestry Institute and at the same time began working at the Kazan Experimental Forestry Station. Subsequently he headed the Mari Forestry Expedition, then moved to Moscow and took the position of senior research fellow at the Institute of Forest Cultures.
In 1935 Gorshin became deputy head of the Wood Protection Laboratory at the Central Scientific Research Institute in Khimki. During the Great Patriotic War he was evacuated to Novosibirsk, where he worked at an aircraft factory. After returning to Khimki in 1947 he resumed his scientific work. In 1970 Gorshin received the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences and the title of professor, published more than 300 scientific works and obtained about 40 patents.
Sergey Nikolaevich was known as an avid collector of paintings and art literature. In 1992 he transferred a significant part of his collection to the State Tretyakov Gallery. In 1993, thanks to his efforts, the Khimki Art Gallery was opened, which he founded and generously supported, donating hundreds of works of painting and graphics, books and reproductions to the city. Gorshin was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Khimki. Sergey Nikolaevich Gorshin died on February 4, 1997, and was buried at the Mashkin Cemetery in Khimki. The Khimki Art Gallery bears his name.
