Sukhoy Log Local History Museum
About museum
Sukhoy Log Local History Museum — one of the museums of Sverdlovsk Oblast — was opened in August 2001. The museum is located in the building of the city Palace of Culture 'Kristall'. The Greek word 'museum' translates as 'temple of the Muses'. A surprising and eloquent coincidence — six muses 'hover' above the museum's windows. So, if you are in Sukhoy Log, don't pass by these inspirers of creativity; drop into the local history museum that they guard from the ephemeral in favor of the eternal. Sukhoy Log is a town on the bottom of a coral sea, so it is not surprising that a place of honor in the Nature Department is occupied by numerous fossilized corals which, like a gun on a theater wall, in the 20th century, after hundreds of millions of years, 'fired': they are now used to produce Sukhoy Log's main product — cement. The museum's collections number about 4,000 items, including collections of ethnography, archaeology, minerals, applied and fine arts, numismatics, and much more. The main theme of the museum is the history of Sukhoy Log — a town located on the bed of the ancient Riphean Sea, the life products of which (fossilized corals and other organisms) are still intensively used by local industries to produce high-quality cement. That is why visitors to the museum will encounter an interesting collection of marine fossils extracted from local limestone quarries. The museum has a cozy corner dedicated to the daily life of the first Russian settlers, with a working loom. Works by homegrown artists and writers, for which the Sukhoy Log area is rich, will evoke warm emotions. You will be moved by heroic stories of how the residents of the workers' settlement Sukhoy Log helped bring about the Great Victory. A unique department is the Museum of Sukhoy Log Sailors. The area's 'maritime' past still whispers to young brave hearts the dream of ships and distant voyages. Sound a real ship's bell and the dream of the sea will surely come true!
