Sakhalin Regional Art Museum
About museum
On August 1, 1983, the Sakhalin Art Museum was registered in the Register of State Museums of the RSFSR. On September 20, 1983, the Sakhalin Regional Department of Culture issued an order to open it. In 1986 the museum was housed in a building that had been built in 1930 for the Japanese Colonial Bank 'Takuseku'. It was designed by an unknown architect in the late Modernist style, creating a special atmosphere for the appreciation of artworks. In 1999 the building was granted the status of a regional cultural heritage site. Under the direction of the museum's first director, R. S. Gorokhova, collections of Russian art and contemporary graphics, works by artists from Sakhalin and the Russian Far East, and Japanese artworks were assembled, and professional contacts were established with museums in Russia, cultural organizations of the republics of the former USSR, and foreign countries (Japan and the DPRK). The Sakhalin Art Museum presents visitors with the finest examples of Russian and foreign painting.
