During the Great Patriotic War the collections were lost, but the museum reopened in 1962. It now houses more than 26,000 exhibits. In 1985 an Exhibition Hall was opened. The exhibition is a historical route beginning with the Neolithic and ending in the 1950s and contains archaeological, ethnographic, memorial and fine art materials and objects related to the history and culture of the southern Smolensk region.
