History Department of the N.N. Muravyov-Amursky Irkutsk Regional Museum of Local Lore
About museum
The History Department of the Russian Geographical Society is housed in a building constructed in 1883 to Rosen's design in the Moorish style. The names of famous explorers of Asia are carved on its frieze. The department features permanent exhibitions. For example, "Ethnography of the Peoples of Eastern Siberia: Buryats, Evenks, Tofalars." These peoples are descendants of the oldest inhabitants of Eastern Siberia. Archaeological collections show that human settlements on this site existed more than 25,000 years ago. The exhibition "The Annexation and Economic Development of the Angara Region by the Russians" shows Russia's arrival in Eastern Siberia and the construction of an ostrog on the Verkholensk side. And the exhibition "Pages of 20th-Century History" presents the history of Irkutsk Oblast over more than a century - from the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway to contemporary events.
