Nature Museum of the urban-type settlement Tankhoy
About museum
The Nature Museum of the Baikal Nature Reserve was founded in 1971. It presents the reserve’s main natural complexes as well as the research carried out in the area. In the center of the museum there is a model of Lake Baikal that allows visitors to visualize the location of mountain systems and rivers. The zoological collection and the herbaria introduce visitors to the reserve’s plant and animal life. The ornithology section is particularly interesting; it contains 104 exhibits. In addition, materials on forest pathology monitoring are displayed. In arranging the museum, curators follow the principle of showcasing the reserve’s main natural complexes. Much of the territory is occupied by the mountain system of the Khamar-Daban Range, as well as the coastal terraces along Lake Baikal with numerous bogs. The museum features botanical research dedicated to the inventory of plant communities and the conservation of the flora’s species diversity.
